Preventing DUIs with Smartphone Apps

A Woman Driving Someone in the United States dies in a car accident that involved a drunk driver every day.  Even more people in the U.S. are charged with driving under the influence every day.

As DUI/OVI defense attorneys in Ohio, we have seen first-hand the devastating effects a DUI can have on a person’s life.  The best way to avoid DUI charges and the injuries that a drunk driving accident can cause is to never get behind the wheel of a car if you have been drinking.

But, we all know that no one is perfect and that there will never be enough designated drivers to go around.  Or maybe there are?  Some smartphone apps offer the ability to find a designated driver in your area.

These could become seriously handy if you are planning a night out with friends, or if you have a few more drinks than you originally planned.  Knowing there is a way to find a sober driver could mean the difference between a DUI charge and getting home safe and sound.

Technology has made it easier to be a responsible drinker, just in time for the push for harsher penalties for DUI convictions.  Here are two of the best apps:

Get Me Home is an app for iPhone that was developed by a University of Alabama graduate student.  The free app provides a list of taxi service in the area if you and your friends have had too much to drink and need a safe ride home.  This app is continuously adding cities across the country — the only downside is that the city must have at least 7 different cab companies to choose from.

Be My DD is a national driving service that provides two different options for getting home.  The services will either drive you and your friends around, waiting for you at each stop (similar to a limo service), or they will pick you up from your final destination.  If you choose the latter, the designated driver service will send two drivers to pick up both you and the car you drove to your destination, safely delivering both to your home. Unfortunately, there is a small downside to this service as well:  you must arrange for a driver in advance, before 11 pm.

When calling a family member or flagging down a taxi isn’t an option, these apps are here to get you home without getting arrested, or fatally injuring yourself or another person.

Even with this great technology, DUI charges happen.  If you have been charged with a DUI in Ohio and have questions about a possible defense, don’t hesitate to contact the Ohio Local Lawyers at Calhoun, Kademenos, & Childress.
